How Does Acupuncture Work?

November 12, 2018

No longer an exotic treatment, acupuncture has actually become quite common and is being used widely as an alternative treatment option. In fact, according to a recent survey, around 3.5 million Americans are said to have gotten acupuncture therapy.

Originating in China as a holistic treatment to cure various ailments in the body, acupuncture has been in practice for almost 2,500 years. Touted to treat everything from depression to allergies, and more in between, acupuncture has been claimed by many as a ’miracle cure’.

But how can pressing tens of tiny needles into your body possibly make you feel any better, you may ask? Won’t it do the opposite and hurt you even more?

Well, no. Let’s delve deeper to see how acupuncture really works:

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese holistic therapy that treats a variety of health conditions by triggering certain pressure points on the skin with the help of needles. It is a minimally invasive process that aims to stimulate certain areas of the body to improve overall functioning.

The theory that explains the working behind acupuncture states that the insertion of acupuncture needles into the site produce a small injury. While it causes little to no discomfort, it is still enough to trigger a response in the body. The body in turn stimulates the immune system which enhances circulation in that area, helping wounds heal and modulate pain.

The Philosophy Behind Acupuncture

While acupuncture can be scientifically explained through the above-mentioned theory, the Chinese philosophy regarding it is a bit more complex. The Chinese believed that all human bodies were filled with an invisible but powerful life-giving energy, which they called ‘Qi’ (or chi).

When the qi flowed well to all the right places, a balance was maintained within the body and the person would be physically and mentally healthy. But if this flow was blocked or disrupted, it would lead to illness.

Does Acupuncture Work?

Having been around for years and practiced widely, acupuncture has amassed a range of studies and research that show its efficacy. One of the largest studies to have shown acupuncture’s effectiveness in treating chronic pain has been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The research involved studying 18,000 patients and acupuncture was found to be an effective treatment for chronic pain.

Along with treating chronic pain, acupuncture can also work in tandem with standard medical practices to treat a variety of ailments.
